Sigma FP weekly build 1

“This is the first post in my weekly Sigma FP build blog. I believe the Sigma FP is one of the most versatile cameras I own. Although I initially bought this little beast primarily as a 4K raw video camera, it also excels as a photography tool and serves as an excellent backup to my Leica gear.

This week, I’m showcasing what I call my minimalist photography build. The goal of this setup is to keep the camera as compact and usable as possible.

The accessories that I will be using are:

  1. Kaktus VSM strap mount (Amazon Link)
  2. Custom made hand grip(Sorry no possible product link as it was made in China)
  3. 1/4 inch Thread Mount Screws (Amazon Link)
  4. Peak  Design anchors for a camera strap (Amazon Link)

Please note that these are not affiliate links, and I do not earn any money from them. I’ve included these links simply to make it easier for you to source the parts for your own Sigma FP builds.

“The Kaktus VSM strap mount is an excellent and minimalist solution for adding strap mounts to the camera. According to sellers in China, the Kaktus VSM strap mount originates from Japan.

The main reason I chose the Kaktus VSM strap mount is that it allows the camera to hang in a horizontal orientation, similar to the Leica M5. I don’t wear my cameras around my neck; instead, I carry them across my body like a sling bag. This horizontal strap configuration made it the perfect choice for this build.

The Kaktus VSM strap mount installed onto the Sigma FP body.

The next step is too install the camera handle. I have a lot of handles for the Sigma FP but this is one of the most compact options that I own.

I’m using a brass 1/4 screw, primarily to complement the brass LLL lenses I own. Over time, I hope the brass screw will age gracefully, developing a rich patina that blends seamlessly into the build.

“The homemade grip, viewed from the side, is extremely lightweight and helps maintain a compact overall design.

The thumb rest is extremely comfortable.

“This build is designed to hang in the horizontal mode, much like the Leica M5. In this setup, the Sigma FP remains extremely compact, making it an excellent choice for everyday carry. I’d estimate that it’s only slightly larger than the Ricoh GR III in this configuration, but with the advantage of a full-frame sensor and a 50mm lens.

“The Sigma FP is significantly smaller than the Leica M10 in this configuration.

I typically use this build when heading out for a day dedicated to photography. It serves as an excellent backup to the Leica M10, and thanks to its compact footprint, it’s easy to find space for it in your camera bag. However, this build does have its imperfections.

You cannot use the EVF or any DPL SSD solutions with this build, making it strictly a photography-focused setup.

The biggest drawback of this build is that I can no longer utilize any of my SSD solutions for shooting raw video. As a result, if I need to record video, I’m limited to internal video recording directly onto the SD card.

Kaktus VSM strap mount still gives you access to the ports but you will need to find an alternative solution for using an SSD.

The final build.

The most addictive aspect of the Sigma FP is its endless options. If you need a different setup, you can simply create it. Next week, I’ll share another Sigma FP build, showcasing a new configuration for this often overlooked yet incredibly versatile camera.
